Today I want to share with you my experience of watching the half-portuguese-half-french film, La Cage Dorée. The film has been quite a hit in both France and Portugal, probably because of the realness of what it portrays.
During the dictatorship that ended in Portugal with the revolution of 1974 and even after that, a big part of the Portuguese population emigrated to France. Many adventured on foot through places they had never even heard of, in an attempt to provide a better life for their families and themselves. My grandfather was one of them, and I am immensely proud of it, and of him. Most of my mother's family still lives in France, and we all owe the opportunities and the life we have to my grandparents and their courage. During the economic crisis we're facing nowadays, this situation is repeating as people my age are forced to do what my grandfather did 50 years ago. I doubt they go on foot and take a month to get there, but I have no doubts whatsoever that it is still very hard for them to leave their country and their culture behind when they don't want to - no matter how much you skype.
La Cage Dorée tells us the story of a couple who emigrated to France in the 70's in order to overcome the difficulties life presented to them, and successfully touches all the cliches that Portuguese emigrants in France face. The director himself pays homage to his parents in the film, who are Portuguese emigrants in France. Even though the storyline might seem a tad sad, don't be fooled - I cried of laughter! After all, some of the scenes in the film happened on the family lunch I had on that same day... It's a beautifully made film, that gives you a very accurate notion of the reality of Portuguese emigrants in France - I should know!
Go see it if you have the chance, I loved it!

Hoje quero-vos contar a minha experiência com o filme 'A Gaiola Dourada'. Tinha muita curiosidade em vê-lo porque venho de uma família de emigrantes e posso-vos dizer que a azáfama toda é merecida!
O meu avô aventurou-se em busca de uma vida melhor meses antes do nascimento da minha mãe, em 1965, a última de nove. Demorou um mês a lá chegar, tempo que a minha avó passou sem notícias, ou melhor, sem novidades de confiança porque até lhe chegou aos ouvidos que o pior tinha acontecido. A coragem não foi só do meu avô, mas também da minha avó que segurou as rédeas por aqui, com nove filhos e sem marido. Eu e a minha família devemos as oportunidades que tivemos e, no fundo, a vida que temos hoje aos meus avós. A eles, um muito obrigada onde quer que estejam! (ai estas lágrimas...)
No entanto, apesar de conhecer a primeira mão a realidade do emigrantes, nasci e cresci em Portugal e conheço ainda melhor o outro lado - a imcompreensão dos portugueses residentes em relação aos que resolveram partir.. A bandeira ou o símbolo da selecção nas camisolas, no carro ou no corpo, a língua que se divide entre o português e o francês, e o antagonismo entre a eterna saudade de Portugal e o 'Na França é melhor'... Eles vivem lá com um pé cá, e não é fácil ser-se de dois países ao mesmo tempo - duas casas, nenhum lar. Parafraseando os meus tios, 'Na França somos Portugueses e em Portugal somos Franceses'. É por isto e por muito mais que eu considero este filme como uma excelente, inteligente e importante forma de educar o povo português sobre a realidade dos seus irmãos pródigos, que deixam de o ser todos os anos em Agosto.
Bem, isto para dizer que, apesar de não ser emigrante em França, identifico-me muito com este filme devido à minha família e ao seu passado, e achava louvável o simples facto de alguém se ter lembrado de retratar esta realidade no grande ecrã. Mas nunca esperei este resultado... O realizador, filho de emigrantes, é também familiar com esta realidade e é aquele a quem devemos agradecer por este maravilhoso pedaço de sétima arte. Já estava contente com o facto de tocaram no assunto, mas fiquei extasiada quando o filme excedeu as minhas expectativas e se revelou uma verdadeira fonte de entretenimento também.
Se puderem, vejam-no porque vale mesmo a pena!
